Speaking ill of the dead

Amongst all the glowing tributes to the Pope the effects of his conservative doctrine are little discussed in the commercial Australian media. Emily Maguire’s article in the Sydney Morning Herald offers a different perspective, discussing the effects of the church’s condemnation of contraception and abortion on AIDS suffers, overpopulated countries in poverty and victims of rape. And we shouldn’t forget the child abuse victims either (because it seems like the church has).

Maybe the Catholic Church should confer a sainthood on Pope John Paul II and make him patron saint of AIDS suffers or child abuse, in keeping with their current good sense about such matters.
